This dam, built in the 70ies is the tallest one in Austria with a height of 205 m and a length of 626 m. Not very tall on a global scale, though impressive. There is a skywalk at the top of the dam, from which you can look down 200 m vertically. Nothing for people with fear of heights, but very impressive. There are many hiking trails all around, from which you can see the wonderful turquoise shimmering lake in the valley underneath the dam. Austria covers actually more than 60% of its electricity consumption by hydropower.
Southern Austria is a hikers paradise. Mid of October we enjoyed still perfectly warm and sunny weather during a hike near the town of Villach in Carinthia. From the mountain top of Dobratsch at an altitude of 2159 m there is a stunning view over Southern Carinthia with its valleys and lakes. Hikers can also visit 2 chapels built in 17th century. And if you are exhausted by the hike you can relax afterwards in the hot springs near Villach.
